Stonehenge, which lies near Salisbury in the south of England, is a megalithic monument built in several stages between 2800 and 1500 BC. It consists a group of raised stones, arranged in a horseshoe shape, within a series of circles. It may have been used as an observatory to establish a calendar and in the prediction of eclipses. Astronomical significance has also been noted for the megaliths found at Carnac in France.
Different
alignments make it possible to spot the position of the sun and the moon
when rising and setting, in midsummer and midwinter through the portals
of the megalithic structures. The inner group of stones is surrounded
by a circle of 56 holes called the Aubrey circle. |
Due to the swing of it's orbit, the moon rises and sets each day at a slightly different point on the horizon. This results in a cycle of 18.6 years, which is revealed by the placing of the stones. Search eBooks.
