It was as Arcadia Shepherds, formed by Chairman Mr. Dolf Stead, that the Pretoria team opened the N.F.L. programme in Durban in 1959. It was a game in which Trevor Gething broke his collarbone and was out for the rest of the season.

Later the name was changed to Arcadia United and in 1963 they amalgamated with Iscor (Pretoria) and Oscar Hurwitz was elected chairman.

This started the importation of overseas professionals and many good players were induced to sign for Arcadia. It also meant the return of two ex-Pretoria players who had gone to Britain to play for Charlton. They were John Hewie and Brian Tocknell. Hewie played many times for Scotland during his stay.

Coaches during those years were Felix Antunes and player Keith Cox. Though in danger of relegation in 1965 they reached the final of the National Cup and repeated the cup performance the next season when Jimmy Kerr was manager. They were defeated both times by Highlands Park.

Other good players to represent the Pretoria team were Shaw, Cocker, Breitenbach, the Johnson brothers, Barber and Owen Beckett.
